Asynchronous Plant Guide

Asynchronous Plant Guide Image

Outdoor plant guiding differs from indoor viewing experiences in that points of interest change with weather and seasons. Therefore, systems designed for indoor viewing experiences are difficult to apply directly. Through three participant observations, we identified issues such as the need to follow the preceding guide, explanations not reaching participants at the rear, the importance of direct interaction with actual plants, and the distortion of information through verbal relay. Building on these observations, we implemented a mobile prototype that places guide videos recorded by preceding guides at the same locations as the plants using location anchors. This enables following audience members to view them later at the same location. We conducted a workshop using this system in a botanical garden and report early design insights and challenges for supporting self-paced outdoor plant exploration.
